Rules & Expectations
TCL is a roleplay-first community. These rules exist to protect the quality of the story for everyone. Read them before you play, and re-read them if you're unsure about anything.
Foundational Rules
Core Conduct
RULE 01
Roleplay First
All player actions must be motivated by in-character reasoning. Combat, theft, and hostility require valid narrative justification tied to your character's story or faction goals. If you cannot articulate why your character would do something, don't do it.
RULE 02
No Metagaming
Information your character does not have in-world cannot influence your decisions. Out-of-character knowledge — from Discord, streams, friends, or third parties — must never be used in-character. This includes knowledge of player locations, plans, or identities your character has not encountered.
RULE 03
Value Your Life
Your character must act as though their survival matters. Suicidal rushes, fearless confrontation of overwhelming odds, and death-seeking behavior are not acceptable. A character held at gunpoint should not charge their captor. Fear and self-preservation are tools of good RP, not signs of weakness.
RULE 04
No Power Gaming
Do not force actions or outcomes on another player's character without giving them the ability to respond. This includes forcing character death, permanent injury, or major story consequences without consent or staff involvement. Roleplay is collaborative — you cannot unilaterally decide what happens to someone else's character.
RULE 05
No Ghosting
Logging off, disconnecting, or going AFK to avoid an active roleplay scenario — particularly capture, pursuit, or consequence — is not permitted. If you must leave, communicate OOC and resolve the situation appropriately. Using disconnects as a tactical escape will result in moderation.
RULE 06
Respect Other Players
Out-of-character conduct must remain respectful at all times. In-character hostility does not extend to real-world harassment, targeted abuse, or personal attacks. Separate the character from the player. If a RP situation is causing genuine distress, use the OOC chat system or contact staff.
Combat & Hostility
PvP & Engagement
RULE 07
Initiation Required
Hostile action against another player requires clear in-character initiation. You must give your target a reasonable opportunity to comply or respond before engaging. Shooting on sight without RP context — unless your character has an established, documented reason — is not permitted. Recording for hostile interactions is always encouraged to ensure fair play and allows players to provide evidence if needed.
RULE 08
New Life Rule
After a character death, you may not return to the area of your death for 30 minutes, and you may not seek revenge on your killers or act on any knowledge your character had before dying. Death is meaningful. A fresh spawn does not carry the grudges or intelligence of the life before it.
RULE 09
Hostage RP Standards
If you take a player hostage, you are responsible for providing active, engaging roleplay for the duration of their capture. Hostages must be given reasonable opportunity to comply, interact, and eventually be released or handed off. Indefinite capture with no RP interaction is not permitted. Any time over 30 minutes requires an OOC consent from the hostage player.
RULE 10
Consequences Must Be Proportional
The severity of your response to a situation must be proportional to the trigger. Executing a player for a minor slight, stealing a faction's entire stockpile after a single disagreement, or declaring war over an unconfirmed rumor are examples of disproportionate escalation that require staff consultation first.
Characters & Lore
Narrative Standards
RULE 11
Character Approval
Characters with special abilities, augmentations, anomalous traits, or faction leadership roles require staff approval before play. This includes any character claiming Imperium affiliation, Horseman involvement, or experimental modification. Submit your concept through the appropriate Discord channel before introducing these elements in-game.
RULE 12
No Lore Fabrication
You may not invent canon-level lore — new organizations, locations, or historical events — without staff sign-off. In-character rumors and personal backstory are permitted within reason, but anything that would affect the shared world or appear in documentation requires approval from the lore team.
RULE 13
Permanent Character Death
Permadeath is voluntary unless agreed upon in advance, or unless it is the result of a staff-run event with established stakes. You cannot force another player's character into permadeath without their OOC consent. If you wish to write a meaningful death for your character, coordinate with staff and the players involved. Environmentals deaths do not have to constitute a permanent death.
RULE 14
Continuity Responsibility
Players are responsible for maintaining continuity within their own character's history and relationships. Contradicting established events, retconning interactions without staff approval, or selectively ignoring consequences you disliked undermines the shared narrative. If you have a continuity dispute, bring it to staff rather than unilaterally rewriting events.
Note
This page covers the core ruleset. Edge cases, clarifications, and full moderation procedures are maintained in the Discord server. When in doubt, ask staff before acting — not after. Rules are enforced progressively, but repeated or severe violations result in removal from the community.
